The above list is listed in order from least paying shows, to biggest paying shows! We will discuss most of these later.
YOU MUST HAVE A PERSONAL PROMO KIT!
You need to get the attention, and open the ears and eyes of the Promoters, Clients, and the Booking Agents. Use promo kit via, Mail, Fax, Press, TV, and other media, including the Internet.
Yes, you MUST have a 'personal promo kit'. This consists of a binder or album of photos, newspaper clippings and headlines, stunts, achievements, testimonials, letters of recommendation, awards, charity certificates, and anything that may assist a potential client to hire your. It should be thick! Even include performances when you were very young.
You may also want to consider going to a professional entertainment photographer like "Celebrity Photos" or "Glamour Shots" in the local mall. These photos are cheep and usually they have all the props and costumes you may require to look great! They normally sell the rights to reproduce these photos for an additional $50 or so. A very good investment.
If you have absolutely nothing currently available, it is well known that some entertainers actually write up their own press reviews, articles, and testimonials, and actually 'fake' their own phony engagement photos. We are not suggesting that you do this, but it has worked successfully for many big name acts.
Your promo kit must include a high quality video or DVD with the best bits of your shows. Video tape is still preferred for several reasons. It is big and when it sits on an agents desk, anyone that comes into contact with it, cannot help to see the explosive pictures on the cover, and will pick it up to look at it. A CD may just get shelved among 100s of others in a small compartment somewhere.
A CD that is not suitable, will just be thrown out. A Video tape will be kept and probably be given away, or used as a blank tape later. It will never be thrown out. This increases the life span of your ad.
Agents receive anywhere from 20 to 100 video tapes per month, from entertainers that the agent has never before met or spoke to. Yours really, really has to stand out over all the rest. It must be first class - no home made stuff. It should be no longer then 8 minuets and have nice fades and credits. Have your best photo on the cover and your best headlines. Contact information should be easy to find.
When you present yourself and your promos to a potential agent or client, they will be impressed by your highly polished act and material. Many other magicians will not be so polished.
Use all resources available, Mailings, Faxing, Press, TV, and other media, including the Internet to get your information out there.
A Website page doesn't actually sell on its own, but is good to have so people can get a feel of what you are all about and the quality of your presentation.

Most booking agents and clients will select you for your initial interview, based on the promos you present and the experience you have had - without ever seeing your act. So make sure that you promo kit is first class. This includes updated recommendations letters, and thank you letters that you have obtained from recent engagements. Always add to your Personal Promo Kit over time.
